The Ivory Bill Woodpecker

The Ivory Bill Woodpecker is considered by many to be America's rarest birds as some believe it still lives a reclusive life in southern Swamps of Louisiana.

Woodpecker Photographed in Louisiana.

Below is a movie segment filmed by Cornell University researchers when they studied the last known population of Ivory Bills in Louisiana in 1935. This is the only known film footage of living Ivory Bills. The population disappeared in 1943. when the area of virgin forest known as the "Singer Tract" was logged by the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The birds were never seen again in that area. However, reports have continued to come in, of these largest of woodpeckers, one as late as April of 1999. Only one such report was confirmed in 1971, no other sightings since have been confirmed.
